Petition: Fair Review of Verge‑Parking Enforcement in Collie Shire

I am starting this petition because I am frustrated with the sudden and heavy enforcement of verge‑parking regulations in our community. Like many of my neighbours, I have been personally affected by what I believe are unreasonable fines for parking on verges — a practice that has been commonplace in Collie for decades without issue until recently.

Verge‑parking has long been an essential part of how residents manage their vehicles and properties, especially in areas where driveways are limited and public parking is scarce. The recent crackdown feels unfair, disproportionate, and poorly communicated. Many residents, including myself, have received hefty fines with little warning and no clear explanation of what has changed in the Shire’s enforcement approach.

Research and common practice show that verge‑parking is widely used in communities with space constraints. It does not harm the environment or other residents, and in many cases it improves road safety by keeping streets clear and reducing congestion. Despite this, Collie Shire’s sudden enforcement has placed unnecessary financial pressure on families who have parked this way for years without issue.

We are not asking for laws to be ignored. We are asking for a fair, reasonable, and community‑informed approach to enforcement.

We request that Collie Shire Council:

Conduct a full review of verge‑parking regulations and enforcement
Pause enforcement until community consultation is completed
Provide clear, consistent guidelines to residents
Consider exemptions for long‑term residents and maintained verges
Recognise properties with limited driveway access
Ensure enforcement is fair, proportionate, and communicated properly
