The Issue

I have known this young African mother for many years, and I have witnessed her dedication, strength, and love as a parent. After a prolonged legal battle, she proved her capability in court, winning the disposition hearing, and her child was not deemed to be a Child In Need of Assistance (CINA). The situation should have concluded there, yet the harassment from Child Protective Services (CPS) in Harford County, Maryland, persists.

Despite a favorable court ruling, CPS continues to file appeals, threaten the removal of her child, and want to keep the case open for months without presenting any new evidence. They've gone as far as misrepresenting medical and cultural facts concerning the family, mislabeling the child as “medically fragile” despite medical records and even CPS’s own systems reflecting otherwise.

This is not just about a single family but a systemic issue impacting many within our community. The undue pressure and baseless accusations leveled against this family are reflective of an underlying bias and lack of cultural competence within CPS that must be addressed. If their actions remain unchecked, other families might undergo similar distressing experiences.

We urge the relevant authorities to intervene and investigate this ongoing harassment. The Department of Social Services must conduct a thorough review of this case, dismiss unfounded allegations, and provide a fair and just closure to this family so that they can move forward without the cloud of unwarranted suspicion hanging over them.

By signing this petition, you are standing with us against the abuse of power and for the rights of families in Maryland and beyond. Let us ensure that all families can live without fear of unjust surveillance and harassment. Sign to put an end to this ordeal and effect much-needed change within CPS practices.
