End the Punishment of Children in Academies for Their Cultural and Neuro-diverse Behaviour

End the Punishment of Children in Academies for Their Cultural and Neuro-diverse Behaviour
The Issue
As a parent of a child who is on the pathway for ADHD and autism, my experience with his school has left me deeply concerned. My son, along with other children, is consistently penalized by teachers for behaviours that are a part of their culture or stem from a disability or perceived disability. This practice, an apparent violation of the Equality Act, has precipitated this call for change. In addition to the personal troubles my son faces, statistics reveal that children with autism are three times more likely to be expelled than their neurotypical peers (Ambitious about Autism, 2016). Schools and Academies should be sanctuaries where children feel safe and understood, not environments where they are punished for their differences. We urge Academies across the UK to stop isolating and excluding children for their cultural behaviours and conditions such as ADHD and autism. We demand equal rights for our children and young people to have access to an education. Academy schools across the UK are failing our children by punishing them and robbing them of their education. Often these children are from deprived backgrounds and have complex lives. Instead, we request the Academies and schools to implement intercultural teaching strategies that accommodate diverse cultures, disability and health situations, fostering a more inclusive and understanding environment for all children. Please stand with us in this fight for equal rights for all our children, and sign this petition today.
