End the Ban on Hijabs and Abayas in French Schools

End the Ban on Hijabs and Abayas in French Schools
The Issue
To the French Government, Ministry of Education, and all supporters of religious freedom and human rights:
We, the undersigned, call on the French government to lift restrictions on the wearing of hijabs, abayas, and other modest clothing in French public schools. The current ban directly impacts the freedom of Muslim students to express their identity and practice their faith, infringing upon fundamental rights that every citizen in a democratic society should enjoy.
These restrictions are not just about clothing—they affect the dignity, cultural identity, and personal freedom of Muslim girls and young women in France. For many, wearing a hijab or abaya is not merely a choice, but a practice rooted deeply in personal values and beliefs. By imposing these limitations, we risk alienating and marginalizing a significant portion of society, sending a message that certain identities are unwelcome or incompatible with French values.
In contrast to the restrictive measures adopted in France, countries like Finland take a more respectful approach to inclusivity and religious freedom. Here, hijabs are permitted in schools, and the country upholds a high level of religious freedom. Finland demonstrates how an inclusive policy can effectively work in society: local brands are incorporating halal meat into restaurant menus—KFC even did this after a petition on Change.org - fashion brands catering to Muslims are emerging, and even women in hijabs are serving in the police force. For example, there is a Finnish brand that creates hijabs and sportswear for Muslim children, giving young people the opportunity to freely express themselves while staying true to their beliefs. In Finnish schools, it’s common to see many children wearing hijabs, as this has become a natural part of the school environment. This example shows that respect for cultural and religious diversity in society is possible and that inclusive approaches help build a harmonious society where everyone feels comfortable and valued.
We believe:
- That freedom of religious expression is a human right that must be protected, especially for children and young adults as they develop their identities.
- That the principles of secularism should not force individuals to suppress their religious or cultural identity but should rather ensure that all identities are respected and can coexist peacefully.
- That schools should be inclusive spaces where all students feel safe and respected, regardless of their cultural or religious backgrounds.
We urge the French government to reconsider these restrictive policies and to respect the diversity and freedom that are the cornerstones of any inclusive society. Join us in advocating for a more inclusive, respectful, and fair approach to education that respects every student’s right to self-expression.
Please sign this petition to show your support for religious freedom and to end the prohibition of hijabs and abayas in French schools. Together, we can help build a France that truly respects freedom, diversity, and human rights for all.
