End property taxes as the primary funding mechanism in Oklahoma

End property taxes as the primary funding mechanism in Oklahoma
The Issue
I never imagined that paying off my home could lead to financial distress, but that's exactly what I'm facing today. Like many of my fellow Oklahomans, I've worked hard to pay off the mortgage, believing it would provide security and peace of mind in my golden years. However, the rising property taxes, based on soaring property values determined by county assessors, have placed an incredible burden on my household budget, forcing difficult decisions and creating constant worry.
Oklahoma's reliance on property taxes to fund local governments and schools isn't just an outdated mechanism, but it's a regressive one that disproportionately impacts seniors on fixed incomes, working-class homeowners, and small business owners. Property taxes are supposed to reflect the community's ability to contribute, but when assessments soar based on paper value—not the true market or living capacity—they can push longtime residents out of their homes.
The current system is taxing people out of the homes they've lived in for decades. It's a growing reality for countless families across Oklahoma. Working-class families, especially, are battered by mounting bills as property values increase. Small business owners are struggling to keep their establishments afloat. Without addressing this, we're heading towards a future where security and comfort for many are out of reach.
We need a better way to support our communities without sacrificing our homes and financial well-being. This starts with urging the Oklahoma Legislature and Governor to revise the current tax system. It's time to identify and implement more equitable and sustainable funding mechanisms that consider income levels and provide relief to those most burdened.
Neighbouring states like Texas and New Mexico have implemented successful alternative models that offer relief. We should study these alternatives and tailor effective solutions for our state. For instance, shifting to a broader-based tax system or allocating more state funding towards education and local governments could lessen dependence on property taxes, allowing for more stable and predictable contributions that respect Oklahomans’ financial realities.
By signing this petition, you are voicing your support for change, advocating for a modernized, fairer system that aligns with our values and economic situation. Let’s work together to make Oklahoma a state where property ownership is a stable and celebrated achievement, not a financial burden.
Please sign this petition to help bring about necessary change in our tax system and protect the homes and livelihoods of countless Oklahoman families.
