End Marriage Discrimination

The Issue

                  End Marriage Discrimination

To:  President Barack Obama, members of the U.S. Senate, and members of the U.S. House of Representatives

Initiated by:  Christine Meredith, LBSW

It is long past time to end marriage discrimination and allow every adult that wants to enjoy the benefits of marriage to finally marry.  Marriage was originally based on the Christian Bible, although we have a secular government.  Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgender people have been denied civil rights due to religious beliefs of other people.  It is unconstitutional to not allow these people the same rights as everyone else in the United States.  Even if the majority of Americans are against gay marriage, they still do not have the right to push their beliefs on someone else.  We need all states to allow and recognize GLTB marriage.  It is clear from our history that the United States government has used religion to discriminate against many types of marriages.  It was not until 1967 that the U.S. Supreme Court overruled laws that did not allow interracial couples to marry.  In America, we are allowed religious freedom.  Therefore, marriage is a civil right for all Americans.

We are asking for the support of every American that believes in basic civil rights for all people to sign this petition.  Allowing GLTB people to marry will make our families stronger and end discrimination once and for all.
