End Homelessness in New York: Increase Single Room Occupancy Dwellings to 300,000

The Issue

If you are reading this right now, then you most likely have a roof over your head and have access to a hot shower and obviously, the internet. There are various reasons why people are homeless and while many did not choose to be in that situation, the government in the State of New York has not been tackling this problem head on.

We have seen old buildings being demolished or renovated by developers just to see them turn into fancy apartments. Maybe it’s time we ease the building code and increase the number of SROs from 200,000 (rough estimate, probably much less) to 300,000 with private bathrooms and kitchens.

While this may not be a long-term solution for families, it can provide some safety and stability for the time being and affordable housing for many low-income couples or single adults.

My ask is simple: let’s get 300 signatures and then we will make a visit to our local congresswoman.

So maybe this is really more than just a 5th grade Civics project, maybe it’s change for real.
