The Issue

While visiting the beautiful mountains near Black Hawk, Colorado, I came across a heart-wrenching sight: a tiny stray puppy struggling to survive in the wild. Despite my efforts, I couldn't save the poor thing. It was so small and vulnerable, unable to find enough food in such an unforgiving environment. This experience has spurred me into action—both for this puppy and countless other homeless animals in our state.

Homeless and stray dogs and cats are an unfortunate and widespread issue in Colorado. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 3.2 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year, many of which are in Colorado. Of these, around 1.6 million are homeless dogs and another significant percentage are cats. These animals face dire conditions, endangering their survival due to scarcity of food, exposure to harsh weather, and lack of medical care.

To address this pressing issue, we need Colorado lawmakers and local governments in areas like Black Hawk to take immediate action by implementing effective ordinances aimed at reducing and eventually eliminating the homelessness of dogs and cats. This can be achieved by supporting initiatives that:

1. Expand funding for animal shelters and rescue operations to increase their capacity for taking in homeless animals.
2. Implement and promote spay and neuter programs to control the population growth of stray animals.
3. Set up community education programs focused on responsible pet ownership, understanding of the importance of spay/neuter, and informing residents of appropriate ways to assist strays in distress.
4. Launch adoption fairs and public outreach events to help find loving homes for the animals in shelters.

Together, we can prevent heartbreaking situations like the one I experienced and ensure a compassionate community for all living beings. Please join me in this mission to provide a better life for homeless dogs and cats by signing this petition and urging our local authorities to make a change.
