The Issue

Displaced International (DI) urges decisive action to end the enforcement of gender apartheid by the Taliban in Afghanistan. This systemic oppression not only denies Afghan women and girls their fundamental human rights but also serves as a driving force behind the mass migration and displacement of Afghan families seeking safety and dignity abroad.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, the enforcement of gender apartheid has stripped Afghan women and girls of their most basic rights, including access to education, employment, and freedom of movement. These inhumane policies perpetuate cycles of poverty, inequality, and violence, creating an unbearable environment for families, many of whom see no option but to flee their homeland.

Every day, thousands of Afghan families with school-age daughters are leaving their homes in search of better socioeconomic opportunities in neighboring countries. Unfortunately, Afghan refugees are often unwelcome in these places and frequently face deportation back to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. This violates the principle of non-refoulement, which Afghanistan’s neighbors hardly respect, consistent with their obligations under the Geneva 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.

Why This Matters

1. Human Rights: Gender apartheid is a gross violation of international human rights standards. Afghan women and girls deserve the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as women everywhere. Afghanistan is the only country in the world where gender apartheid is unprecedentedly enforced.

2. Migration Crisis: The denial of women’s rights is a root cause of forced displacement and migration. Families are compelled to leave their homes to escape oppression and ensure their survival.

3. Global Stability: Mass displacement places immense pressure on neighboring countries and the international community, destabilizing regions and diverting resources that could otherwise support development and peacebuilding.

Our Call to Action

We call on world citizens to join Displaced International in demanding that:

1. Governments and International Organizations:

  • Condemn the Taliban’s enforcement of gender apartheid and recognize it as a crime against humanity under relevant international laws.
  • Apply diplomatic, economic, and legal measures to pressure the Taliban to uphold women’s human rights and to reverse all the edicts and decrees they have passed to deprive Afghan women and girls of their basic human rights, including secondary and tertiary education, employment, and freedom of movement, among others.

2. The United Nations and Human Rights Bodies:

  • Mobilize resources and expertise to document and prosecute gender apartheid as a violation of international law.
  • Support Afghan women-led organizations advocating for gender equality and human rights.
  • Support displaced-led organizations, providing socioeconomic facilities and opportunities for Afghan women and girls in countries of asylum.

3. Global Citizens:

  • Sign this petition to amplify our collective demand for justice and equality in Afghanistan.
  • Advocate for policies that address the root causes of forced displacement and migration, ensuring Afghan families can live in safety and dignity within their own country.

Conclusion

The oppression of Afghan women and girls is not only a national tragedy but a global crisis. By standing together, we can send a powerful message to the Taliban and the world: gender apartheid is unacceptable, and the rights of Afghan women are non-negotiable.

We urge you to sign this petition and join us in building a future where Afghan women and families can thrive in freedom and security. Together, we can make a difference.
