End After-School Detentions to Protect Students' Safety and Dignity

End After-School Detentions to Protect Students' Safety and Dignity
The Issue
As a concerned parent of a Year 10 student, I am deeply troubled by the current practice of after-school detentions. These detentions not only infringe upon our children's personal time but also put them at potential risk, especially during winter months when daylight is scarce. This policy forces children to travel home at later hours, increasing their vulnerability to harm from predators.
Moreover, these after-school detentions reflect an imbalance in power dynamics between teachers and students. Teachers are given considerable authority over disciplinary measures without sufficient checks and balances. This can lead to situations where punishments are meted out unfairly or excessively, forgetting that students are human beings with rights and feelings.
It is essential that we prioritize the safety and well-being of our students above all else. Therefore, I propose that all detentions should be carried out within school hours instead of extending into personal time after school.
In addition to this change in timing, it is crucial for educators to be reminded about treating their students with respect and understanding. Schools should provide regular training sessions for teachers on effective discipline strategies that respect the dignity of each student.
I urge you all - parents, educators, policymakers - let us work together towards creating safer schools where every child feels respected as a human being rather than treated like a robot programmed for obedience. Please sign this petition calling for an end to after-school detentions and promoting respect-based disciplinary practices in schools.
