Encourage Australia to support babai pit agriculture in Kiribati
The issue
What is the Problem?
Climate change is threatening food security in Kiribati, a small Pacific Island nation. Rising sea levels, saltwater intrusion and extreme weather are placing increasing pressure on freshwater supplies, agricultural land and local communities. The majority of Kiribati's 33 islands are already sitting less than two metres above sea level.
One of the greatest impacts has been on babai pit agriculture, a traditional farming practice that has supported Kiribati communities for generations. Babai is a native root crop traditionally grown in deep pits on Kiribati's low-lying islands. However, rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion are making it increasingly difficult to grow, reducing local food production and threatening an important food source and traditional practice.
This has led to an increasing reliance on imported foods. Approximately 64% of food consumed in Kiribati is imported, making it more difficult for communities to be self sufficient.
Who is being affected?
The impacts are being felt through Kiribati communities. Small Pacific Island nations, including Kiribati, contribute less than 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet experience some of the most severe impacts of climate change.

Suggested message:
"I am writing to encourage increased Australian support for climate adaptation and food security initiatives in Kiribati. Rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion are threatening traditional food systems such as babai pit agriculture. As a close Pacific neighbour and major development partner, Australia has a responsibility to support climate adaptation and food security initiatives throughout the country "
As one of the countries closest regional neighbours and development partners, Australia has a responsibility to support climate adaptation and food security initiatives within the country.
Together, we can help protect traditional food systems, strengthen food security and support a more climate-resilient future for Kiribati.
