Enact Stronger Legislation to Protect Native Bird Species from Cruelty

Enact Stronger Legislation to Protect Native Bird Species from Cruelty
The issue
Our treasured bird species endure a silent plight daily. In the second half of 2024, I personally experienced the anguish of losing over 40 cockatoos (this flock were all my friends for the past 5 years) in the suburbs of Sutherland Shire, victims of a deliberate poisoning act using heavily toxic pesticides. Also little corellas in Hamilton, Newcastle and Carrington regions were poisoned and killed cruelly followed by cockatoo poisonings in the Blue Mountains region of NSW. Most recent horror of more than 200 corellas poisoned in Springvale South VIC. These are the so called Protected /Native Species in Australia. What a shame!
Australia is home to over 900 bird species, many of which are endemic and are decreasing in numbers due to these unlawful, inhumane acts (BirdLife Australia).
The time to act is now! My appeal towards Australian authorities like Environment Protection Authority (EPA), RSPCA and to the Minister for the Environment Australia, to urgently introduce stricter laws protecting our native birds from culling. Poisoning, shooting or harming the birds intentionally or unintentionally is a criminal offence. Such investigations must be carried out more seriously so that it is not adopted as a viral practice in the society. We cannot stand by as more precious lives are lost. This petition is not merely for the birds who have lost their lives but for the ones still fluttering their wings against threats.
We propose that relevant authorities take such cases of nature vandalism more seriously and increase penalties for such cruel activities, enhancing the enforcement efforts and investing in educational programs to cultivate respect for wildlife. In Australia, the maximum penalty for an individual is 50 penalty units or six months in prison, or both. For a corporation, the maximum penalty is 250 penalty units.. However, these penalties often are not enough to deter individuals with harmful intentions towards our winged friends.
Our native birds play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem. They control pests, dispose of waste, and spread seeds. Their decline can potentially send shock-waves across our ecological system, disrupting the fine balance of nature. Though each species has its own personality, loud voices and cheeky behaviour but none of these can be labelled as pests in the community. We as humans are superior to them and must use our wisdom in accepting the birds as a part of the environment and nature. We need to accept that we share this planet with other living creatures. Adopting better and safer means to keep the birds away must be adopted than any harsh practices.
Sign this petition if you believe in advocating for stricter laws that protect our native birds from culling and unnecessary harm. Stand with us as we fight for their right to fly freely and safely in their native skies. Your support can make a meaningful difference in their lives and the future of our environment.
