The issue

I am reaching out to bring attention to an issue that affects both students and trade teachers at Nerang State High School. Our school offers a Trade Program that is meant to nurture and prepare students for a future in the trades—a pathway essential for many youths aiming to develop hands-on skills. However, the current entrance criteria for this program, where the deputy principal has the final say based primarily on students' attendance records, is failing our students.

Attendance is, of course, important for following through with commitments, but it should not be the predominant factor determining a student's eligibility for such a crucial program. The trade teachers who work directly with students day in and day out understand their students' unique abilities, strengths, and motivations. These educators bring hands-on experience and valuable insight into each student's potential to excel in a trade career.

By sidelining the trade teachers' recommendations, we risk denying students an opportunity that they are genuinely suited for. Some students may not have perfect attendance due to legitimate reasons yet possess undeniable passion and skill for their chosen trade. Meanwhile, others might have excellent attendance but lack the necessary skills and dedication, which only the trade teachers can properly evaluate.

To ensure we are genuinely supporting students' futures in the trades, I propose that the decision-making process for eligibility in the Trade Program at Nerang State High School be revised. We need to incorporate comprehensive assessments that include the direct input and recommendations of trade teachers. This multi-faceted approach will allow us to recognize students' potential beyond mere attendance records.

Empowering trade teachers to have a stronger voice in these decisions will not only boost the morale of our dedicated educators but also enhance the readiness and suitability of students entering the trade program, ensuring future success for both parties.

I urge you to sign this petition to uphold a fair and thoughtful decision-making process that truly reflects the students’ abilities and potential. Together, let's advocate for a system that benefits both the students and the teachers who are vital to shaping their futures.
