Empower Students to Change Their Lives! (Bring Mental Health Education to Schools)
The Issue
So many children struggle with mental health now more than ever, while many do not have access to mental health care. Bringing mental health care directly to the public education system will allow for this need to be addressed and will allow more people than ever to benefit their well-being.
With suicide being the 2nd leading cause of death especially in teens, we need ways to bring mental health care to school, where everyone can benefit from it. Having a solution and a positivity-based curriculum can help everyone no matter where they are in life.
My unique solution is not only having mental-health education being brought to schools to support those without means or access and allow them to develop important skills, it is an advocacy for a program that everyone can benefit from. Even those thriving in their lives can always improve their mental-wellbeing and learn strategies to do ever better. Mental health care with an emphasis on positivity can help these students succeed in school by providing them with the self efficacy to earn better grades as wells as build resilience to conquer challenges at home. This program will also incorporate discussion-based activities for the kids/tweens/teens to participate in that will allow them to explore solutions and apply what they have learned. A class incorporated into the school’s curriculum with a grading system or an extra program that facilitated after school in the form on a club can be ways to execute this program.
Some aspects that define this solution include lessons on important topics like depression, anxiety, ADHD, eating disorders and more, but also a focus on solutions and ways to cope. They are able to discuss possible ways to cope based on what they were provided and can talk about how they each can apply this to their own lives. An additional awards program which includes a tracker that allows the student to describe what the situation was and how they used what they learned in class to better cope will receive a hole in a punch card and these can be traded in for various prizes. This will positively reinforce the behavior as well as they are encouraged to describe what they did in the group discussion where they can get further feedback and additional reinforcement.
As someone who personally experienced and worked through huge battles in mental health, I know that having this opportunity can make a huge impact. These strategies will allow students build more resilient futures and become better individuals that can empower future generations to do the same. Let's empower this generation and the generations thereafter.
