My daughter, diagnosed with Autism and experiencing high anxiety, has navigated through three different schools and has been home educated twice due to inadequate support. Despite reaching out to Additional Learning Needs Coordinators (ALNcos), teachers, and Local Authority (LA) representatives, not once have I received accurate guidance or support. Instead, I have faced misleading information, exploiting my lack of legal training, ultimately disadvantaging my daughter's educational journey.

In the face of these challenges, it is crucial to transform the communication and support framework between educational professionals and parents of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The heart of the issue lies in empowering parents with the right information, devoid of any biased directions towards specific solutions.

Parents should have seamless access to guidance that isn't restricted by biases or preconceived notions of what 'works best.' ALNcos, teachers, and LA representatives must engage in providing comprehensive advice that diverges from specific solutions, offering a panoramic view of the educational opportunities and resources available. They should be focused on informing parents of their rights, options, and the pathways that best suit their child's unique needs.

This can only be achieved if ALNcos and other educational staff are encouraged to direct parents thoughtfully and with integrity, without the looming fear of compromising their professional roles. Legal frameworks must protect educational professionals when they are advocating for the genuine educational upliftment of children.

The key lies in fostering a systemic change in the culture of advice and guidance in educational institutions. We must target policies that ensure educators are trained in legal frameworks, know how to offer unbiased guidance, and are safeguarded in their roles while directing parents without prejudice.
