The Issue

Right now, animal shelters across Florida are in crisis. From Miami to Jacksonville, shelters are bursting at the seams with cats and dogs who have nowhere else to go. The heartbreaking truth? Many of these animals are being surrendered by loving families who simply can’t afford to care for them anymore.

With the cost of housing, food, and veterinary care continuing to rise, pet owners are facing impossible choices. Inflation and economic instability have pushed countless people to give up their pets—not because they want to, but because they have no other option. As a result, shelters are overwhelmed, staff are burned out, and animals are being turned away or, in some heartbreaking cases, euthanized due to lack of space and resources.

This isn’t just an animal welfare issue—it’s a community crisis. These shelters serve as a last safety net for vulnerable animals and struggling families alike. But without emergency funding and immediate support from state and local governments, this safety net is breaking.

We’re calling on Florida’s Governor, state legislators, and local governments to allocate emergency funding for animal shelters across the state. This funding would provide food, medical care, staffing, and space upgrades to handle the surge in surrendered animals—and support struggling families in keeping their pets at home through assistance programs.

No one should have to choose between feeding their family or keeping their pet. And no animal should be left behind simply because there wasn't enough help.

If you believe that animals and families deserve compassion, and that Florida can—and must—do better, add your name to demand urgent action. The animals can’t speak for themselves. But we can speak up for them.
