Right now, animal shelters across Georgia are at a breaking point. Kennels are full, staff are overwhelmed, and more pets are arriving every day—many surrendered by families who simply can’t afford to care for them anymore. Inflation, rising rent, and job insecurity are forcing heartbreaking choices, and it’s our shelters—and animals—that are paying the price. 

In some counties, shelters are so overcrowded they’re having to turn animals away, or worse, consider euthanasia for healthy, adoptable pets. This isn’t just a shelter crisis—it’s a community crisis. When families are struggling to make ends meet, they should be met with compassion and support—not forced to give up beloved companions because help isn’t available.

We’re calling on state and local officials in Georgia to step up with emergency funding for animal shelters and pet retention programs. This includes resources for veterinary care, food assistance, foster placement, and community outreach that keeps pets with their families whenever possible. These aren’t luxuries—they’re life-saving solutions.

Shelters can’t do this alone. The people of Georgia are already donating, fostering, and volunteering, but without swift government action, this system will collapse. And the animals—who did nothing wrong—will suffer the consequences.

Let’s not wait until it’s too late. Georgia can lead the way in showing how a state supports both its animals and the people who love them. With the right emergency support now, we can prevent unnecessary suffering and keep families together.
