Emergency Funding Needed for Overcrowded Animal Shelters in New Hampshire

The Issue

Right now, animal shelters across New Hampshire are overwhelmed. Rescues and shelters report a heartbreaking rise in the number of pets being surrendered—not because people don’t love their animals, but because they simply can’t afford to care for them anymore. Inflation, housing instability, and rising veterinary costs are forcing families to make impossible choices.

This isn’t just a pet issue. It’s a community crisis.

Shelters are running out of space, supplies, and staff. Volunteers are stretched thin. In some cases, animals are being turned away or kept in emergency overflow conditions. These organizations are doing everything they can, but they cannot keep up without immediate help.

We’re calling on Governor Sununu and New Hampshire’s state legislature to allocate emergency funding for animal shelters. This funding would help provide food, veterinary care, foster support, and temporary boarding assistance for struggling families—keeping more pets out of shelters and in loving homes where they belong.

No one should have to surrender a beloved companion because of a temporary financial hardship. And no shelter should have to choose between taking in another animal or turning them away because there simply isn’t any room.

Animal shelters are part of New Hampshire’s safety net. They support families, reduce public health risks, and prevent suffering. But right now, they need our support.

Please sign this petition to demand immediate state-level funding and support for animal shelters in crisis. Together, we can ensure no animal is left behind just because their human hit hard times.
