Emergency Funding Needed for Michigan's Overcrowded Animal Shelters

The Issue

Right now, animal shelters across Michigan are facing a crisis — one that’s quietly growing worse every day. Overcrowding has reached emergency levels as more and more families are being forced to give up their pets due to financial hardship and the rising cost of living.

From Detroit to Grand Rapids, shelter staff are overwhelmed, resources are stretched thin, and animals who once had loving homes are now in cages — waiting for a second chance. This isn’t because people stopped caring. It’s because inflation and housing insecurity have left many families with no choice.

When rent goes up, when groceries cost more, when wages don’t keep up — it’s pets who suffer too. Many shelters are now taking in animals faster than they can adopt them out, and with funding already tight, they are running out of space, supplies, and staff. Some are even at risk of turning animals away or worse — considering euthanasia to cope with the overflow.

We believe Michigan can do better. We’re calling on Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Legislature to allocate emergency funding for animal shelters and rescue organizations across the state. This funding should help shelters expand capacity, provide temporary pet support for families in crisis, and increase access to low-cost veterinary care and pet food assistance.

No one should have to give up a beloved pet because they lost their job or couldn’t afford vet bills. No animal should be left behind because of economic hardship. Michigan’s shelters are sounding the alarm — now we need leaders who will listen and act.

Please sign and share this petition if you believe our state must protect the vulnerable — including the animals who have no voice. The clock is ticking for too many of them. Together, we can push for compassionate solutions and give Michigan’s pets — and their people — a fighting chance.
