Eliminate the United States debt ceiling
The Issue
Tens of thousands of individuals across the United States find their livelihoods, well-being, homes, and properties jeopardized each year because of the federal debt ceiling and the ensuing government shutdowns. While this hot-button issue may not be personal to every single one of us, it is immensely personal to the many who face uncertainty and financial hardship due to break-downs in government funding.
The debt ceiling, an arbitrary cap on the total amount the U.S. government is authorized to borrow to meet its existing obligations, is putting people out of work as political stalemates over increasing or suspending this limit lead to government shutdowns. When shutdowns occur, federal workers face furloughs, government contractors find their payments suspended, and essential public services are left in limbo. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that each week of a shutdown costs the economy billions of dollars, weakening our national infrastructure and workforce.
Many economic experts argue that the existence of a debt ceiling is not only outdated but counterproductive. The United States is one of the few countries that has such a mechanism in place. Countries like the United Kingdom and Canada manage their national debt through other fiscal policies, without setting arbitrary borrowing limits. Removing the debt ceiling would not mean unchecked spending. Instead, it would allow the government to uphold its existing commitments and manage fiscal policies more effectively.
If we eliminate the debt ceiling, it enables the government to function without the constant threat of shutdowns, protecting workers and the economy from unnecessary harm. Congress would still maintain checks and balances on budgetary matters, negotiating appropriate spending levels during the budget process.
Forced into discussion, this idea could lead to more stable governance and financial security for millions. We must put an end to the recurring stalemate that threatens our nation's workers and their families.
