Eliminate Plastic Wrapping on Bananas in Supermarkets

Eliminate Plastic Wrapping on Bananas in Supermarkets
The Issue
Bananas, by nature, come with their own biodegradable packaging. Yet, many supermarkets insist on wrapping them in unnecessary plastic. This practice contributes to the growing problem of plastic pollution.
According to a report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), an estimated 300 million tons of plastic waste is produced every year, a significant amount of which ends up in our oceans and landfills causing harm to our environment and wildlife.
By eliminating plastic wrapping on bananas - one small step among many needed - supermarkets can reduce their contribution to this global issue and set an example for other businesses as well. We urge all supermarkets to stop the use of unnecessary plastic wrap on bananas and encourage consumers to support this change for a healthier planet.
France banned this practice in 2022 and Spain quickly followed suit in 2023 yet still in 2024 in the UK we continue of talk around this but no action has been taken. Why do we remain so slow to act?
Please join me this March, leading up to Food Waste Action Week, with the aim of encouraging people to Choose What you Use and sign my petition to encourage our Government and Supermarkets to act quicker to make this happen.
