Elbows up!! Let's Bring a National Hockey League Team BACK to Hamilton, Ontario, CANADA!

The Issue

We, the undersigned, hereby petition the National Hockey League to consider bringing a professional team back to Hamilton, Ontario in recognition of the city’s rich hockey culture, its passionate fan base, and its central location within Canada’s hockey landscape.

Hamilton's original NHL team, the Tigers, were unjustly taken away from the city exactly 100 years ago in March 2025, only to be essentially reincarnated as the New York Americans.  [Goodness, what a team name.]

As Canada navigates uncertain economic times—exemplified by the looming threat of U.S. tariffs that can have an outsized impact to our country's Steel City —we believe that an NHL team in Hamilton would not only strengthen our national pride but also provide a significant boost to our local and national economy.

Why Hamilton Deserves to Get Back Its NHL Team:

Rich Hockey History: Hamilton has a proud hockey tradition, with passionate fans who have supported numerous teams in the past. It was also where the iconic Gretzky-to-Lemieux moment that clinched the 1987 Canada Cup took place.

Strategic Location: Hamilton's central location within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) offers proximity to one of the most significant hockey markets in North America, while providing an opportunity to reach millions of fans in southern Ontario, southwestern Quebec, and beyond. Hamilton’s well-connected infrastructure, including highways and public transit, makes it an ideal hub for fans.

Economic Stimulus: In light of the economic pressures stemming from the threat of tariffs between Canada and the United States, an NHL team in Hamilton would be a much-needed catalyst for growth. A professional hockey team would create jobs, boost local businesses, and bring in tourism revenue through home games, merchandise sales, and related events.

Fan Demand: Hamiltonians have long expressed their desire for an NHL team. Numerous surveys and even deposits collected for seasons ticket over the years show overwhelming public support for bringing the NHL to Hamilton. The NHL's own past studies have indicated that a team in Hamilton would be one of the highest-revenue franchises in the entire league.

National Pride: In challenging times, uniting Canadians through the national sport of hockey becomes even more important. An NHL team in Hamilton would serve as a symbol of resilience and pride for the entire country, and a beacon for the future of Canadian hockey.

Dangit, You (Pretty Much) Owe Us: Frank Calder, the president of the NHL, shut down the Hamilton Tigers and sold them to American interests because of a players' strike that involved a request of $200! This move paved the way for broader expansion into the US. Hamilton has also played the part of a pawn in numerous NHL owners' threats of relocation.

Our Call to Action:

We call upon the NHL to seriously consider granting Hamilton an NHL franchise. We call upon Canada's people of influence to flex their monetary and political muscles and make this thing happen!

We, the undersigned, believe that Hamilton is not only a viable market but a community that deserves the opportunity to support an NHL team. Now is the time for action. The NHL in Hamilton is the future.

Sincerely,

The people of Hamilton, of Canada, and of the world!
