Ekka long weekend petition

Ekka long weekend petition
The Issue
I want a long weekend in August. For people working inside the Brisbane City area, the Ekka holiday is the only public holiday we get between Labor Day in early May and the King’s Birthday in early October. The fact that the only holiday we get during that five-month drought is on a Wednesday makes it almost pointless. By shifting the Ekka holiday to either a Monday or Friday, everyone in Brisbane would have the opportunity to relish a three-day weekend.
Having a mid-week public holiday disrupts the work week without offering the relaxation and productivity reset that a long weekend provides. Many professionals in Brisbane share this sentiment, as it is not just about having a day off but maximizing our time to rejuvenate. Moreover, when scheduled cleverly, long weekends contribute to mental well-being, reducing burnout and improving performance at work.
Businesses, too, would benefit from this change. A Monday or Friday holiday would encourage local tourism, prompting many Brisbanites to explore the beautiful offerings of Southeast Queensland. In addition, local businesses could experience a surge in operations, with people more likely to spend on dining, shopping, and leisure activities compared to a mid-week break.
Aligning the Ekka holiday with a long weekend format is not a novel idea. It is a proven influencer in boosting regions' economies while enhancing residents' quality of life. Surrounding regions and states already benefit from strategically placed long weekends, and Brisbane should not lag behind.
A practical shift in the holiday timing can enhance work-life balance, promote better mental health, and stimulate the economy. Sign this petition to urge local authorities to change the Ekka public holiday to a Monday or Friday and transform it into a valued long weekend.
