Don’t relegate teams in an incomplete season
The Issue
There are strong rumours that, due to the current suspension of the season because of Covid 19, the Premier League & EFL may use a points per game system to conclude the season. This would result in teams being relegated, despite having their survival fate in their own hands at the time the season was stopped. Teams are struggling financially already due to the impact of Covid 19 and an unfair relegation would only compound this.
The system wouldn’t consider the level of difficulty of the remaining fixtures a relegation threatened team would face or the current form of their scheduled opposition, which fluctuates throughout a season.
The chosen game week of suspending the season will also directly impact the teams relegated. This is controversial as the decision taken to suspend the league was not enforced by the government. One game earlier or later would change the teams relegated. Why did the Premier League and EFL choose to end the season at that point? Why not earlier? During the last gameweek played the EFL and Premier League had stopped the shaking of hands before matches, acknowledging the risk of the virus spread between players at games. Should the season have not been stopped rather than these ineffective measures being put in place for a weekend?
The fairest option would be to finish the season, but if this is not considered possible - which is another debate - then relegation should be stopped this season. There are many alternative options that don’t result in teams being relegated without having fulfilled their fixtures.
