The Issue

Many schools in Ireland only allow the female students to wear long skirts and don’t give us the option to wear trousers. I and many others believe that this is objectifying female students bodies and not allowing us to feel comfortable in our school environment.
We have also been told not to wear leggings because they are ‘inappropriate’ ‘disgusting’ and ‘reveal everything’. This is extremely inappropriate for grown men especially and women to think that it’s okay to call underage, impressionable young girls that their bodies are a distraction and if these grown adults think that this is okay and are commenting on young women’s bodies they should not be working in a school environment.
Many young women feel unsafe in their current school as teachers are telling them their bodies should be covered because they are a distraction and instead of teaching young women how to dress, we should teach teachers not to comment on our bodies as it does affect our mental health getting told comments by people who are meant to be educating us.

In differnet classes, we are learning about feminism and sexism and why it is wrong but schools continue this behaviour to a certain extent. We shouldn’t be taught one thing and be told another as it confuses a lot of us as to what our school truly is trying to change by doing this.
