Educate on Fentanyl Signs and Narcan Use in Schools and Clubs

Educate on Fentanyl Signs and Narcan Use in Schools and Clubs
The Issue
My daughter, Shakeeleah Chantaye Miller,, aka Poosha 29 yrs of age tragically passed away in November 2022 from a fentanyl-related incident at a party. After what was presumed to be intoxication, she was taken upstairs to rest but never woke up again. Something as small as a grain of salt could take such a big life. This heart-wrenching event has left a void in the lives of her two sons and our family, serving as a poignant reminder of the consequences of being uninformed.
To prevent future tragedies like this one, we must push for mandatory education across all middle and high schools, alongside bars, clubs, and any events where adults and teens gather. The education should focus on raising awareness about the signs and symptoms of fentanyl exposure and the crucial steps required to help someone in such an emergency, particularly with administering Narcan, a life-saving opioid overdose reversal medication.
The opioid crisis is not just a headline; it is a reality that affects real families every day. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fentanyl is now involved in more than half of opioid overdose deaths, rapidly becoming a public health crisis. Many are unaware that even a tiny amount of fentanyl can be lethal. Symptoms can be subtle but can quickly become life-threatening.
We propose that educational institutions integrate opioid awareness programs into their curricula. Bars and clubs can contribute by providing training for staff to both recognize overdoses and administer Narcan effectively. These measures can immensely mitigate the risks teens and adults face in today's society.
This petition goes beyond mere awareness; it empowers individuals with the knowledge and tools to act during critical moments, potentially saving lives and preventing heartfelt losses that families like mine endure.
Sign this petition to honor Shakeeleah’s memory, and safeguard the lives of countless others who may be unaware they are at risk.
