  • We, the undersigned, are concerned about the recent push to change the name of one of the most historic professional sports franchises in North America. The Edmonton Eskimos have a long and proud history, the name having been in use as far back as 1893, used with respect, with honour and with celebration.

We acknowledge and recognize that the world is changing, and that we must be cognizant of racial divides and tensions. However, we feel that the perception of the term "eskimo" as pejorative is based on a misunderstanding of terminology and word origins. We also believe there is becoming a dominance of "cancel culture" which seeks to undermine much of the proud history that we share. This needs to be halted.

We have tremendous esteem for the first peoples of Canada's far north. We believe their physical and mental toughness, resilience, ability to overcome challenges and to thrive in the face of adversity exemplifies the character of a Canadian football team like no other people. As the CFL's northern most franchise, the Edmonton Eskimos are in a unique position to represent that pride and to be a bridge-builder to Canada's First Nations. This club also boasts one of the most fiercely dedicated fan bases in all of sport, many of whom have followed the team for decades, and may even view a name change as an act of disloyalty from the team they fiercely defend.
