In the United States, no one should be prosecuted because they stood up to a president.

But that’s exactly what appears to be happening now. Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted just days after President Donald Trump publicly called for his prosecution — pressuring his handpicked attorney general to bring charges against one of his most prominent critics.

The charges stem from testimony Comey gave to Congress in 2020. Legal experts, including Justice Department officials, reportedly concluded there wasn’t enough evidence to bring a case. But after Trump replaced career prosecutors with loyalists, the indictment was filed anyway — by a newly appointed U.S. Attorney with no criminal experience and a direct political connection to Trump.

This sets a dangerous precedent. If any president can use the Department of Justice to target personal enemies, then no American — Democrat, Republican, or Independent — is safe from political retaliation.

We, the undersigned, demand:

• That the Department of Justice drop the charges against James Comey immediately
• A full investigation into possible political interference in the case
• Legislation that restores guardrails between the White House and federal prosecutors
   

This isn’t about liking or agreeing with James Comey. It’s about protecting the rule of law from political abuse. Comey is entitled to due process — not presidential revenge.

If we let this go unchallenged, we open the door to a justice system that answers to power, not principle.

Drop the charges. Restore integrity to the Department of Justice.
