Instead of making "Shrek 5", just remaster Shrek I & II

The Issue

Shrek has been an iconic part of pop culture and internet culture for more than a decade now. Obviously, the movie franchise made an insane amount of money overtime. Sadly, with each sequel the quality and the acclaim of each movie kept getting lower and lower until the franchise eventually ending with Shrek 4.

For quite a while now, Shrek 5 has been rumored left to right, a remake, a sequel, a reboot, cancelled or not... Nothing is really clear as of yet where this project is going. It is said to "re-invent the series" since Shrek 4 was meant to be the last installment in the franchise. I think it should be kept that way.

Shrek 4 offerred an ending to everything that fans are content of and are now used to. Trying to build something up around that is obviously not a great start for a movie. Plus, a Shrek 5 movie would have extremely high expectations from movie-goers considering the immense legacy left by the previous films. It would be a very demanding challenge to rise to those expectations. In other words, the movie could very easily fail and disappoint. No one would want that.

That is why, instead of taking all those risks and doing something that could very likely be a disaster, it would be more profitable to remake the first two movies ( the best ones ) but with the technology of today. Shrek was made in 2001 and Shrek 2 in 2004. The animation technology has extremly advanced since and it would be valuable to re-animate the movies today.

A lot of video-games get remastered and I don't see why it could happen with movies. Re-releasing the two movies today, with modern technology, would be a box-office success when you consider Shrek's legacy. Not only would it please older fans that grew up with Shrek, but it would also bring in a younger audience that is not familiar with those movies and would make them discover something they otherwise might have not watched. Finally, no one would have to worry about the movies story-wise since we've already seen them and know that they are masterpieces!

Overall, I think it would be better for everyone, Dreamworks and the audience, if they remastered the first two Shrek movies and re-released them instead of adding another movie to a franchise that has already been closed.
