Students of Ontario Tech University started this petition to Dr. Michael Bliemel and

As many of you know, Intermediate Managerial Accounting (BUSI 3180) and Advanced Financial Accounting (BUSI 4130) are scheduled on the same day, December 9th 2020.

This petition is to escalate this issue further as recent actions have not been successful.

It will be extremely difficult to write two, three hour accounting major exams on the same day. Both of these core courses are required for the CPA and are heavy in content. In addition, they are scheduled on the very first day of exams, with no break between classes and exams. This gives us very little time to prepare.

The stress, anxiety and pressure leading up to the exam and on the exam day will be unbearable for all of us students. As a result, it will be difficult to successfully complete both three hour exams in one day. This scheduling only disadvantages us, as finishing exams earlier only strains our mental health further.

It is critical for us to perform well as it is our final year and many of us are planning on pursuing our CPA in the near future. Our success and performance is more crucial than ever in this uncertain environment that affects our ability to secure employment, admission into the Accounting Graduate Diploma/CPA PEP, and successfully transition into the labour market. This negatively impacts the value of our education in the long term.

This is not the way any of us wanted to spend our last year online. We have worked hard throughout our university career and want to finish strong. Ontario Tech University stands for their students, and we all have had many great experiences and memories here at Ontario Tech. Unfortunately we have not received that support from faculty, staff and the school itself. This dire situation makes our experience less memorable, and we would like to leave on a positive note. We want to remember Ontario Tech in a positive light and recommend it to the students of tomorrow.

We are open to alternative options and dates.

These times are stressful as is, and we would be grateful if this issue was further considered by; John Friedlan (Accounting Program Director), Dr. Theresa Miedema (Associate Dean), Dr. Michael Bliemel (Dean of Faculty of Business and IT), and Ontario Tech University itself.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration,

Students of Ontario Tech University

*EDIT: We understand exams are scheduled by the Registrar’s Office using complex formulas to reduce exam conflicts like this.*
