Petition updateA Petition for Wilchester Elementary ParentsSophistry and Semantics

In its response to parents’ questions, the district claims that parents are misinterpreting the situation. But the response is just a continuation of the same sophistic arguments, semantic games, and weaponized bureaucracy that it has employed throughout this process.

Regarding the district’s interest in investigating the principal’s culpability in facilitating a presentation to PreK-2nd graders about homosexuality, the district says it is not “aware” of any such instances. But I had just told them about one. So, of course they are aware of that one. They just refuse to acknowledge or investigate it.

Regarding the district’s interest in holding principals accountable for believing that child transgenderism, child sexual activity, and cop-killing are appropriate subjects for elementary students, the district continues to cling to explanations about book-selection policy. But the question is not about book-selection policy. It is about a principal’s ability to discern appropriateness.

There is a simple way to allay parents’ concerns here: Ask the principal to clarify whether she believes the subjects are indeed age-appropriate. Instead, the district adamantly asserts that it is not a principal’s role to determine appropriateness. The argument is absurd. Judging the age-appropriateness of presentations, books, and curriculum is an obvious and important part of an elementary-school principal’s role. But the district fecklessly pretends like it is outside of their control.

One fact helps to clarify the district’s view on appropriateness — the district believes these subjects are indeed appropriate for middle-school students. The Breakaways remains in at least one middle-school library, where it was prominently displayed with the district’s knowledge.

This district has a radical view of what is appropriate for young students. This petition focuses only on specific issues of which we are aware. But one must suspect that these issues represent just the tip of the iceberg.

We must insist on common-sense governance of our school district. And the situation at Wilchester Elementary demonstrates that the current SBISD board and administration are not up to the task.
