A Petition for Wilchester Elementary Parents
A Petition for Wilchester Elementary Parents
The Issue
Wilchester Elementary has intentionally placed books with highly inappropriate content into the school library. One such book, The Breakaways, features:
· Middle-school-aged protagonists happily playing in a room with a poster that reads “BLEED THE PIGS,” an apparent reference to killing police officers;
· Two middle-school-aged protagonists kissing in a bed during a sleepover; and
· A middle-school-aged protagonist questioning her biological gender
The book is written in a graphic-novel style that is popular with primary-school-aged children and is designed to make the inappropriate content unapparent to unsuspecting child readers. A student recently expressed discomfort to her parents after stumbling upon the inappropriate content.
Principal Goodman recently confirmed that The Breakaways was intentionally approved by the school with guidance from “sites” approved by Spring Branch Independent School District. When confronted with these three specific examples of inappropriate content, the Principal not only refrained from expressing any regret about her decision to put copies of the book into library circulation, but went further to extol the book’s virtues. The Principal asserted that such books provide “balance” to the library, offering kids “mirrors” to see themselves in and “windows” to see into other worlds.
An elementary-school principal who fails to recognize how such content could pollute a young, impressionable mind demonstrates an evident and appalling lack of judgment. A principal who extols the virtues of such content and intentionally places it within kids’ reach is unfit to work in an elementary school.
This incident, in conjunction with the Principal’s decision to block parent volunteers’ access to the library and her unreceptive attitude toward parents’ other concerns, should compel Wilchester Elementary parents to take action. Sign this petition if you wish to hold the Principal, a public employee, accountable for her actions.
