In 2018, when CPBH asked the PC Party of ON what it would do if elected, the response included ending Tarion’s monopoly.
Before he was elected Premier, Doug Ford said "Government should not have a monopoly on any business..."
Last week, the Ford Government broke its election promise, when it passed its Bill 159, the “Rebuilding Consumer Confidence Act, 2020”.
Obviously this was a huge disappointment for so many who have worked to end Tarion’s monopoly - and who believed what the PCs said before the election.
But there is much progress to report:
- Consumers – from across the province - loudly and clearly told the Ford Government that we didn’t support Bill 159 – and that it doesn’t rebuild consumer confidence;
- The Official Opposition, the NDP, voted against Bill 159;
- The Liberals voted against Bill 159;
- The Green Party voted against Bill 159; and
- Independent MPP Randy Hillier voted against Bill 159.
The only support that the Ford Government had for Bill 159 was from the building industry.
So, while the Ford Government had the numbers to pass this woefully inadequate bill into law, the official records of the Ontario Legislature show that the PCs stood alone -- except for builders.
In less than two years, Ontarians will go to the polls again, and we will have another opportunity to let the politicians know what is important to us.
Thank you to everyone who:
- made presentations to the two government committees*,
- wrote letters and made telephone calls,
- signed this petition.
Your efforts made a big difference and we are very grateful.
Our work continues.
