Govern The Police! End police brutality.

Govern The Police! End police brutality.
The Issue
Improve police governance! We need to demand for the implementation of new and improved police control measures that prevent the police from acting on discretionary powers unjustly and unlawfully!
The power is with the people. And with enough people we can enforce change.
Actionable police reform:
- Legally enforce police body cameras and audio equipment to be a mandatory requirement and always recording whilst on police duty. The recorded footage to be stored without any intermission for a minimum of one year unless a complaint has been filed for that period, in which case the footage to remain intact for at least the duration of the complaint. Complain requested footage to be provided to the complaintive within 14 days.
This is will provide clear evidence for police offences allowing victims to fairly prosecute police offers. - Harsher sentencing for police offences. The police are in a position of heightened power and authority which inherently should increase their duty of care towards citizens. The abuse of police authority can be profound where, as we’ve seen with the #BLM movement, can result in deaths.
The police are currently seen to be given lenience in circumstances of police offences, but the opposite should be applied to reduce the continuity of offences. Police offers need to be given stringent punishments for abuse of their powers, and even more so when they have committed an offence.
- Fatal choke holds to be banned in police conduct. The police force is trained to restrain individuals in many ways. Choke holds should not be one of them. Choke holds can lead to fatal consequences as they restrict air flow to the brain and so should be banned and deemed as an office in police conduct.
- Increase police training on their powers and authority. The abuse of police power is prevalent as seen in the #BLM movement. The police need to be continuously trained on what they are legally allowed to enforce, and, more importantly, what they are not legally allowed to enforce. They also need adequate training on racial profiling, the different forms of police discrimination, and vulnerable people handling focusing on the elderly and 'invisible' disabilities.
- The appointment of a police arbitrator. In situations of public distress, where a civilian is fearful of police wrongdoing, the people should be able to call for an independent arbitrator to conclude the situation. It is not acceptable for the police to act as the highest power of authority in a situation of wrongdoing where bystanders are unable to rightfully intervene.
These 5 pragmatic changes have the power to reform the police to increase public safety, improve the public perspective of the police, and, most importantly, save lives! And we, the people, demand their immediate enforcement for our protection!
