The Kemper is a part of recent KC history. It would also be extremely wasteful to tear down this wonderful building because it doesn't quite fit the needs of the present renters!

Kemper Arena is currently being threatened to be torn down by the American Royal. The American Royal wants to construct a new, smaller complex on the land to better suit their needs and is asking for $50 million in public funding. This includes putting the city on the hook for a $6 million tear down of the arena. Unfortunately, the American Royal has a lot of political power behind it in Kansas City, and the destruction of Kemper Arena is a real possibility.
On the other hand, Foutch Brothers is proposing to redevelop the historic Kemper Arena. The renovation plan is to convert the building from the current arena into a multi-level facility to be utilized by the growing amateur sports community in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The plan calls for no money from the city to be completed.
Public funds requested: American Royal, $50 million. Foutch Brothers, $0.
An important point, Foutch Brothers proposal would still allow the new American Royal Complex to be built and only result in a loss of 150 parking spaces. The American Royal refuses to acknowledge this as a possibility.
Kemper Arena has an incredible history in Kansas City. Opening in 1974, the arena won awards for the modern design and architecture of the building. It has been home to NBA and NHL teams, a Final Four, a political national convention, and hosted concerts for the biggest names.
Kemper Arena has a viable plan ready and should not be torn down!

Historically significant events have taken place at Kemper. West Bottoms is in general historically significant and is a protected historic resource on the National Register. The buildings around should remain standing to preserve the character of West Bottoms.

I forged some important memories here when I was a kid, including being fortunate enough to get to skate and play pick up hockey with KC Blades players. I even sold programs with my younger brother before and during the first period of games just to see the rest for free! It means a lot to be able to transform this very capable space into a home for youth athletics of any kind.

I'm signing to save a KC landmark and to save taxpayer's money.
I like the private developer's plan to preserve the building and cost nothing to keep it.
I've always loved the building. I hate to see Mariner Kemper acting as though it's his personal belonging. Seeing Foutch's plan realized would be an enormous boon to the Bottoms.
This is a Kansas City treasure that still to this day is known around the country. I as a tax payer would love to see it stay! You say American Royal and everyone know Kemper. No more funding from us as tax payers for people to destroy our history for their gain! What has Sprint Center done for us besides take our taxes and charge us locals outrageous prices for events and concessions.
I don't agree with spending $50 million dollars to tear a perfectly good building down just to spend $something million to build another building in it's place. I think it would be better to renovate Kemper Arena or figure out events to have there and make it useful again!
