Don’t Euthanize 7 Lions — Demand the New Zealand Government Step In

The Issue

Seven elderly lions at the Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary in Whangārei are facing euthanasia — not because they are suffering, but because the sanctuary can no longer afford to feed and care for them.

These lions, aged 18 to 21, have spent nearly their entire lives in human care. Now, as the park closes its doors, they are being treated as financial burdens rather than living beings deserving of dignity and compassion. The sanctuary’s operator has said there are “no real options left,” but that isn’t true — there are always options when a government and community choose to act.

New Zealand can do better than letting lions die because of money.

We call on the New Zealand Government — specifically the Department of Conservation (DOC), the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), and Minister for Conservation Tama Potaka — to step in immediately to:

  • Pause any euthanasia plans at the Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Coordinate with national and international sanctuaries to find suitable homes for the lions.
  • Provide short-term emergency funding or logistical support to ensure the animals are cared for while relocation options are explored.

These animals once drew visitors and inspired children about wildlife and conservation. They deserve peaceful lives, not death due to financial hardship. If New Zealand allows this to happen, it sends a terrible message — that compassion depends on a balance sheet.

We understand that caring for large carnivores is costly and complex, but solutions exist. Sanctuaries around the world are willing to help when governments lead the way.

Please sign to urge the New Zealand Government to act now — to save these lions and ensure that no animal in our care is ever euthanized simply because the money ran out.

Together, we can give these lions the respect and mercy they deserve.
