Don’t Cut Minnesota Support for Private School Students

Don’t Cut Minnesota Support for Private School Students
The Issue
Gov. Tim Walz has proposed eliminating $109 million in state support for nonpublic school students. The funding pays for busing, textbooks, nurses, and counselors—resources that many working-class families depend on to access the education that works best for their children.
This isn’t about elite prep schools. At Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Minneapolis, 75% of students live in multilingual households and every student receives financial aid. At Notre Dame Academy in Minnetonka, nearly a third of students receive tuition assistance. These families rely on transportation and support services to make school possible.
In rural communities, school buses funded by this aid are often the only way students can attend school at all. The governor’s proposal would hit the most vulnerable students hardest, while leaving wealthier families largely unaffected.
Minnesota made a promise in 1969 to help all students get to school safely and learn with dignity—regardless of whether they attend public or private institutions. Cutting this funding now betrays that promise.
Tell lawmakers to reject this cut and preserve access for the families who need it most.
