Doing More With Less: Reduce the Amount of Waste We Generate!
The Issue
With the rapid growth of the population, a tremendous amount of waste is produced. As we all know, the consumed goods are usually packed in containers made with plastics since it is very convenient to use. Subsequently, after consumption, waste is generated however rather than being recycled, most of us choose to throw it away.
With this information, we can notice that population growth challenges our ability to live sustainably as several of us harness the planet's resources to meet our daily necessities needed for survival. Many consume without being mindful of how it could affect or impair future generations' ability to meet their own needs.
Due to overflowing trash, we can't deny that the environment is degraded, changed, and polluted throughout the years. According to a report by the United Nations Environment Program, there are 14.66 million tons of trash a year in the Philippines. No wonder why our country is the 4th largest generator of solid waste among country members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Hence, we must exercise prudence and frugality toward sustainability.
Here are the things you can do:
- Invest in stainless steel water bottles. In a year, more than 481.6 billion plastic bottles were consumed globally. Plastics are non-biodegradable and take about four hundred up to one thousand (400-1,000) years before decomposing. With that, tumblers must be utilized as they will lessen the number of plastic usage and production.
- Make use of reusable bags or paper bags. You can put reusable bags to use, save money and reduce waste. It's like hitting two birds with one stone. Meaning you can achieve two things by doing a single action. Thus, it's a win-win situation between yourself and our environment.
- Eat at home instead of dining outside. Most restaurants or fast-food chains tend to use disposable straws, spoons, forks, and packaging. Thus, choosing to eat at home will minimize single-use plastics.
- Support sustainable goods or commonly known as Eco-friendly products. Remember that there is only one Earth, and if we don't take care of it, no one else will. According to Pete Seeger, "If it can't be reduced, reused, repaired, rebuilt, refurbished, refinished, resold, recycled, or composted, then it should be restricted, redesigned, or removed from production"
