District 9 Residents Oppose Hyperscale Data Centers in Rural Prince George's County
The Issue
While we were trying to dig out of the ice and snow from Winter Storm Fern, the Prince George's County Planning Board voted to have the County Council introduce legislation to permit data centers in the rural residential, rural agriculture, and agricultural zones. This legislation, which primarily affects District 9 of Prince George's County, MD, threatens the character and essence of our community.
District 9 is known for its picturesque landscapes, abundant greenery, and close-knit community spirit. It's an area where families have thrived for generations amidst the tranquility of rural and bedroom living. The introduction of hyperscale data centers is poised to fundamentally alter this way of life. Residents are concerned about potential spikes in noise pollution, and significant strain on our local infrastructure.
Moreover, hyperscale data centers are notorious for their enormous water and energy consumption. According to a report by the Uptime Institute, data centers account for about 2% of the total electricity consumption in the United States. In our agricultural zones, this will exacerbate the already pressing issues of sustainable water usage and energy conservation.
Our community's rural and agricultural zones are essential havens for biodiversity and environmental conservation. The construction of data centers could potentially harm the local flora and fauna and disrupt the habitats of various species. It's paramount to preserve these ecosystems not just for our generation but for the future as well.
While the Prince George's County Council Chair said she would not introduce the legislation, we want to make it unequivocally clear that residents of District 9 DO NOT WANT Hyperscale Data Centers in District 9! We want our leadership to engage with the local community to find alternatives that are in harmony with our suburban and rural environment. Instead of allowing hyperscale data centers, we recommend investing in technologies and policies that promote sustainable development and energy efficiency.
By signing this petition, you show your support in preserving the suburban and rural character and environmental integrity of District 9. Join us in protecting our homes, our community, and our future. Please sign and circulate.
