Dignity in Choice: Legalize Euthanasia in Singapore

The Issue

To the Government and People of Singapore,

In the spirit of progress and compassion, we stand at the precipice of an essential human rights movement: the right to die with dignity. As a nation that has consistently prioritized innovation, empathy, and individual empowerment, Singapore must now take the courageous step forward in addressing the needs of those enduring relentless physical and psychological suffering.

For decades, medical advancements have prolonged life, yet the quality of life for those with incurable illnesses or unyielding mental anguish remains a growing concern. It is time to recalibrate our approach to end-of-life care, embracing euthanasia as a carefully regulated, ethical, and compassionate option.

Why Legalizing Euthanasia Matters:
Human Dignity: Every individual deserves autonomy over their own body and life. For those who face unbearable suffering, euthanasia offers a way to regain control and choose a peaceful, dignified end.
Psychological Suffering: Modern science acknowledges that psychological anguish can be as debilitating as physical pain. Mental health is health, and those trapped in unrelenting despair should not be forgotten.
Compassionate Frameworks: Other nations, including Belgium and the Netherlands, have demonstrated how euthanasia can be implemented safely and ethically, with strict safeguards to prevent misuse.
Altruistic Legacy: In cases where terminally ill patients choose euthanasia, organ donation could be an act of ultimate altruism, turning personal tragedy into lifesaving hope for others.
Safeguards to Ensure Safety and Ethics:

  • Comprehensive medical and psychological evaluations by multiple professionals.
  • Mandatory waiting periods and exploration of all possible treatments.
  • Rigorous government oversight and transparent reporting mechanisms.

Singapore is a society built on empathy, respect, and the relentless pursuit of better outcomes for its people. By legalizing euthanasia, we can transform end-of-life care, provide solace to those in despair, and reaffirm our commitment to human dignity.

We, the undersigned, urge policymakers to take immediate steps to introduce legislation for the compassionate legalization of euthanasia in Singapore.

We, the undersigned, believe that every individual has the right to die with dignity. We urge the Singaporean government to legalize euthanasia, under strict safeguards, for those suffering from unbearable and irreversible medical conditions, including both physical and psychological.

The current law in Singapore denies individuals the right to choose how and when to end their lives, even in cases of intolerable suffering. This can lead to unnecessary pain and anguish for both the individual and their loved ones.

Euthanasia is a compassionate and humane option that allows individuals to end their lives peacefully and with dignity. It is a choice that should be available to those who are suffering unbearably, regardless of their medical condition.

We believe that legalizing euthanasia would:

  • Provide relief to those suffering from unbearable and irreversible medical conditions.
  • Respect individual autonomy and the right to choose.
  • Reduce the risk of unregulated and unsafe assisted suicides.
  • Promote open and honest conversations about death and dying.

We understand that euthanasia is a complex and sensitive issue. However, we believe that the benefits of legalization outweigh the risks. We urge the Singaporean government to consider our petition and to take steps to legalize euthanasia under strict safeguards.
