Gravenhurst, ON – Thursday June 13th, 2024 – For nearly two decades, the Muskoka Shield Tier II Junior "A" Hockey Club has been an integral part of the community in Gravenhurst. A Cloud of Injustice:
In December 2022, the Muskoka Shield faced a grave injustice when its Club President, GM & Head Coach was falsely accused of assault during a league game. This baseless accusation led to his immediate suspension from the GMHL, leaving the team without its leader for the critical final 21 games of the season where the team’s WIN-LOSS record went 1-21, with a 1st Round Playoff Sweep, Exit & Early End To The Year.
The Repercussions Were Severe:
Team Performance: Once a formidable contender for the championship, the Muskoka Shield climbed from dead last in the least when Ownership took over in 2021 to 3rd place in the GMHL’s North Division. Then tragically tumbling from 3rd place to the bottom of the league standings without their President, GM & Head Coach, culminating in a very early heartbreaking playoff defeat.
Operational Suspension: The unjust circumstances surrounding the Club President's suspension resulted in the team's operational halt for the entire 2023-2024 season, exacerbating the impact on the organization, players, and loyal fans.
Economic Fallout: Local businesses, already navigating challenging times, experienced a noticeable decline in revenue due to the absence of the Muskoka Shield, underscoring the team's substantial economic contribution to Gravenhurst.
Loss of Talent and Support: Uncertainty about the team's future prompted the departure of sought-after players and the withdrawal of crucial local sponsorships, jeopardizing the team's long-term sustainability.
Termination of Ice Contract: Most significantly and monumentally distressingly, the Town of Gravenhurst abruptly terminated the Muskoka Shield's ice contract at Graeme Murray Arena without warning or due process, coincidentally just after Club President, GM & Head Coach was falsely charged for assault during a league game severing a vital link between the team and the community it serves.
A Plea for Justice & Unwavering Loyalty:
Despite facing significant challenges, a glimmer of hope emerged as the GMHL granted full reinstatement to the Muskoka Shield for the upcoming 2024-2025 season. However, this victory is incomplete without a home. Without the reinstatement of their ice contract at Graeme Murray Arena, the Muskoka Shield, one of the last three Original 7 GMHL clubs, faces the dire prospect of extinction.
The Shield Ownership Group initiated an online petition on 'Change.org' with the aim of gathering 100 signatures for presentation to the Town Council. Launched on April 19, 2024, the petition reached 100 signatures by May 1st and has since garnered 511 signatories, standing united in their call for justice and the revival of the Muskoka Shield. In a display of unwavering support, Gravenhurst resident and avid Shield hockey fan Bill Oosterholt collected nearly 100 signatures in a three-hour span outside Sobeys in Gravenhurst in early June.
A Glimmer of Hope:
The Shield Ownership Group has been granted the opportunity to address Gravenhurst Town Council at their upcoming meeting on Tuesday, June 18th @ 3:00 pm for a 10-minute deputation on the ice contract reinstatement. The meetings are open to the public and will be held at Town Hall, 3-5 Pineridge Gate. Agendas and Minutes are available Online.
We, The Shield Ownership Group Implore the Town of Gravenhurst to:
- Review this case with fairness and transparency.
- Acknowledge that all accusations against the Club President have been disproven in provincial court.
- Uphold 'Public Participation In Decision-Making,' as encouraged by Town of Gravenhurst by-laws, giving due weight to the 600+ (500+ Digital + 100 Written) Signed Signatures of the #SaveTheShield Community Petition.
- Immediately reinstate the Muskoka Shield's ice and facility contract at Graeme Murray Arena for one calendar year at the rate of which the previous contracts were stipulated, enabling the team to reconstruct their roster and program in preparation for the 2024-2025 season as training camp would be scheduled to commence inside 90 days.
- Engage in sincere negotiations with the Muskoka Shield ownership to establish a new, mutually beneficial facility and ice contract schedule ensuring the team's enduring stability and success relating to Academy of Hockey Development Program, Community Programs, Banquet Facility Rentals, Snack Bar Rental, etc…
- The Gravenhurst Community, wholeheartedly endorse the reinstatement of #TheShields facility and ice contract, providing the Shield Ownership Group the opportunity to guide the town through another thrilling season, restore faith among the community, league, players, and sponsors, negotiate successful terms with the Town of Gravenhurst for ice contract renewal, and reclaim its rightful place in the heart of our community. The Muskoka Shield Tier II Junior Hockey Club embodies more than just a sports team; it represents community spirit, resilience, and the unifying power of sports. We refuse to let injustice prevail.
