Save Woodlands School
The Issue
My friend and I have decided to start this petition to save Woodlands School. Our names are Georgina Toon and Kris Roscoe and we are 17 years old. We were both former Tile Hill Wood and Woodlands students and are now currently studying at the West Coventry Sixth Form.
The Department of Education and the school governors are undergoing plans to close down Woodlands School and move them in with the Tile Hill Wood girls on the Tile Hill Wood Site. Although to a lot of people, this won't seem like such a bad idea, no one thinks about the students and teachers who will suffer from this. Parents choose to send their children to these individual schools as they offer single sex education. Mixing these school's together will mean a mixed gender education, many of which parent's do not want.
From our experiences, both our parents sent us to these separate school's due to the fact they were single sexed. Many amazing teachers from both sites will be lost due to the lack of jobs available which will be affecting many families everyday lifestyles.
Both sites' do an amazing job in their teaching standards and to lose so many will be devastating. Also, having a full change of site and teachers can be very stressful on the students and their parents. A merge of the two schools will also mean parents having to spend money on another new uniform for their child, money that many families wont be able to afford, especially if more than one of their children came to either one of these schools. Tile Hill Wood already lacks enough space and facilities for the students who are there now. Bringing another average of around 600 students to Tile Hill Wood, the school wouldn't be able to cope with the capacity. 6 weeks would not be enough time to expand the site to be able to fit the new load of students.
Woodlands school has been open since 21 September 1954, that's 62 years, coming to the end of an era is upsetting but also unnecessary. " In 2003, the school was awarded specialist status as a Sports College", this is a prestigious award and may students come here for the high standard gym that Woodlands have to offer.
Closing Woodlands down can end the boys dreams of having the career in sport that they want, here's just a few of boys from Woodlands who went on to do amazingly in their sporting career:
Neil Back (born 1969), rugby union player who has played for the English national team.
John Gray, English cricketer, and rugby union, and rugby league footballer of the 1960s, '70s and '80s, playing for Warwickshire (cricket), and Marylebone Cricket Club, England 7s (RU), Coventry R.F.C., Great Britain (RL), England, Wigan, North Sydney Bears, and Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.
Danny Grewcock (born 1972), rugby union player who has played for the English national team.
David Moorcroft (born 1953), athlete.
Tom Wood (born 1986), rugby union player, currently playing for Northampton Saints and the English national team.
Cyrus Christie (born 1992), professional footballer, currently playing for Derby County in the English Football Championship.
Stripping young boys from this opportunity is surly demoralising? I hope all this information will give you an insight to what is really happening and gives you the opinions of how the students feel.
