Mondekazi Ntshele started this petition to Department of Education and

The department of basic education together with the leading government have taken a biased decision to prioritise science and mathematics over other subjects in a country rooted in inequality, plagued with social ills, with the majority of its people living in poverty, uneducated and low skilled. For years DoE has perpetuated the stereotype that science and mathematics are more important than other fields of study by awarding and funding top achievers in science and mathematics excluding hard-working learners in Social Science and Commerce fields. The government biasedness has led to parents forcing their children to do science and mathematics because they believe they will have a better chance in life. Learners who are doing other subjects are made to believe that the field of studies they in are not important for the development of the country and both government and schools treat these other fields as secondary subjects all the focus is given to science and mathematics which is damaging to learners in the same system.

The call made through this petition is for the recognition of every top achiever outside of the science and mathematics field. This will have a direct impact to learners who have been working hard in passing in other subjects such as Commercial studies and Social Science studies, learners who are top achievers like those in science and mathematics, who have invested so much time and effort into their studies. This will also give pride and confidence to parents and communities who have been working hard in assisting and supporting these learners. It will also give a sense of acknowledgement to people who have studied the subjects mentioned above and working in those fields/industries to plough back to their communities for the betterment. The shift will have a great impact far more than what we have now. National Senior Certificate Results announcement has been giving attention and awards only to science students ignoring the other important students in the education system. This has raised more concerns to other learners, in particular, those who study other subjects such as accounting, economics, history, geography, tourism.

The recognition and financial investment to other fields outside of science and mathematics is critical to motivating learners to pursue other fields with South Africa having so many social ills i.e. low financial literacy and investment, depression, suicide cases (adults and children), poor administration in the etc. South Africa is currently in need of holistic development, having a skewed recognition is detrimental as it hinders its full development.
