The Issue

Maryland’s Attorney General has filed a federal lawsuit seeking records about conditions inside the Baltimore ICE holding facility at the George H. Fallon Federal Building.

According to the Attorney General’s office, detainees may have been held beyond legal time limits, denied adequate food, water, and medical care, and forced to endure overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. A federal court reviewing a related case found that detainees were routinely held overnight and for more than 12 hours in holding rooms designed for short-term detention.

These allegations are serious. No one in government custody — regardless of immigration status — should be denied basic human needs or held in conditions that violate the law.

Transparency is not optional. ICE and DHS must cooperate fully with lawful investigations and provide requested records so the public can understand what is happening inside this facility.

We call for an immediate, independent investigation into conditions at the Baltimore ICE facility, full compliance with record requests, and public reporting of findings.

Accountability and humane treatment are not partisan issues. They are constitutional responsibilities.
