Demand Transparent Debate on Newbury Town Centre Pedestrianisation
Demand Transparent Debate on Newbury Town Centre Pedestrianisation
The Issue
We, the undersigned, call on West Berkshire Council to uphold transparency, accountability, and democratic process in its handling of the proposed pedestrianisation of Newbury town centre.
Recent developments, including the circulation of a leaked report concerning the pedestrianisation plans, have raised significant public concern. These proposals have far-reaching implications for residents, local businesses, accessibility, and the overall vitality of Newbury. Despite this, the Council’s administration has failed to provide adequate opportunity for timely public discussion and elected member scrutiny of both the report and its consequences.
This lack of open debate undermines public trust and risks decisions being made without proper consideration of community impact.
We therefore call on West Berkshire Council to:
Facilitate an urgent and open debate on the contents of the leaked report at the earliest possible date for an Extraordinary Council meeting.
Ensure full transparency by publishing all relevant documents and data related to the pedestrianisation proposals.
Engage meaningfully with residents, businesses, and stakeholders through proper consultation processes before any decisions are finalised.
Commit to democratic accountability, allowing elected councillors sufficient time and information to scrutinise proposals that affect their constituents.
Newbury deserves a decision-making process that is open, inclusive, and accountable. We urge the Council to act now to restore confidence and ensure that any future for the town centre reflects the needs and voices of the whole community.
Sign this petition to demand transparency, proper debate, and a fair process for Newbury.
