Demand Transparency and Fair Leadership in Black Rock Philharmonic
The Issue
Over one hundred volunteer musicians—string players, brass, woodwinds, percussionists, and singers—contribute to BRP each year at Black Rock City. The conductor, Eric, who has led and personally funded much of the orchestra’s operations for years, has now been forced to resign following internal accusations and ultimatums from a single unelected leader controlling the 501(c)(3) sponsor account. The official announcement described the resignation as “for personal reasons.” Internal correspondence indicates otherwise: there was no vote, no hearing, and no opportunity to respond. Long-time section leaders and first-time participants alike have been left uncertain about the future of the orchestra.
Without action, the BRP is at risk of being dissolved. The orchestra that has performed for years across the playa depends on collective trust and transparent organization. When decisions of this scale are made unilaterally, that trust disappears. If addressed promptly, the group can rebuild under fair governance—through transparent process, shared oversight, and continued access to the instruments, music, and funds that belong to the community.
It is November 2, 2025, shortly after one of BRP’s strongest seasons. Planning for the next year typically begins immediately after the Burn. Delay means lost time, fading momentum, and loss of experienced participants. This petition seeks 250 signatures to prompt a public response before next year planning collapses.
We request:
Full transparency — release of internal correspondence, allegations, and decision records, including control of the 501(c)(3).
Due process — an impartial review allowing Eric the opportunity to respond.
Elected oversight — a representative committee for future governance and dispute resolution.
Safe reporting — a confidential channel for anyone with information or concerns.
The goal is to restore transparency, reestablish fair process, and, if supported by fact, reinstate Eric as conductor. The broader aim is to preserve BRP as a functioning community orchestra that reflects the collaborative values of the Burn.
Sign and share if you believe creative projects belong to the community—not to any one individual.
