Demand Transparency, Accountability, and Reform in NHL Officiating

The Issue

We, the fans of the National Hockey League, are calling for immediate reforms to NHL officiating. For far too long, we've watched inconsistency, missed calls, dangerous plays ignored, and referees seemingly managing game outcomes instead of enforcing the rulebook.

Whether in the regular season or playoffs, it's clear that:

  • Dangerous hits and infractions are often overlooked, even when officials have clear sight.
  • Penalties are called based on “game flow” instead of fairness or safety.
  • Certain teams or players appear to receive preferential treatment.
  • There is zero transparency or public accountability when officials make critical errors.

This undermines player safety, team performance, and the integrity of the game itself.

We demand the NHL take the following steps to restore faith in the officiating system:

  1. Third-party oversight of NHL officials with public performance reviews and grading.
  2. Expanded video review for serious missed penalties, such as headshots, cross-checks to the face, and late hits.
  3. Accountability measures for referees who fail to enforce the rules, including fines, suspensions, or demotion.
  4. Public explanations for controversial no-calls or rule misinterpretations.
  5. A consistent standard of officiating enforced throughout the regular season and playoffs.

We are not asking for perfection—we are asking for fairness, transparency, and a commitment to the safety and integrity of the game.

If the NHL wants to grow the sport and maintain the loyalty of its fans, it's time to take this issue seriously.
