Demand Their Release: Where is Iranian actor Mohammad Sadeghi?

The Issue

BACKGROUND:
On the 16th of July, beloved theatre actor Mohammad Sadeghi took a stand for justice during a live video on social media. He bravely stood in solidarity with the women in Iran, protesting against the systemic torture and pressure they face under the despotic regime for compulsory hijab. Little did he know that he would soon become a victim of the very injustice he was vocalising against.

MOMENTS OF TERROR:
As Mohammad Sadeghi expressed his solidarity, security forces invaded his home violently to silence him. The world witnessed the illegal and forceful entry into his residence, and security forces unlawfully abducted him without any valid reason or warrant.

In a moment of terror, Mohammad Sadeghi's desperate cries for help echoed through his apartment and globally on his live video as he pleaded for his rights to be respected. Despite his courageous reminder to forces that a legal and permissible warrant was required for his arrest, his pleas were ignored. Faced with the imminent threat to his life and freedom, he had no choice but to attempt a daring escape through his apartment window, scaling down the building to avoid unlawful abduction.

Mohammad Sadeghi is now reported as having been taken into custody by the security forces.

A GLOBAL OUTCRY:
The events that unfolded on that fateful day were witnessed by millions across the globe. Mohammad Sadeghi's stand for human rights resonated with people worldwide, garnering widespread concern for his safety and well-being.

OUR DEMAND:
Today, we raise our voices to call upon international governments and organisations that champion human rights to take immediate action. We demand that the Fact Checking mission at the United Nations underscores hostage-takings and abductions as the blueprint of the Islamic Regime, using the case of Mohammad Sadeghi as a direct example. We unequivocally demand the release of Mohammad Sadeghi from custody, as his detention was unjust and unlawful.

Furthermore, we call for an end to arbitrary detentions in Iran, emphasising that individuals should never be silenced or punished for exercising their freedom of speech. Since September 2022, over 22,000 individuals have been arrested for being associated to the Woman Life Freedom movement in Iran.
