Demand the Government to Continue Funding Level 3 Criminology Courses

The Issue

As a criminology teacher, I am deeply concerned about the government's decision to stop funding Level 3 Criminology courses. The last cohort of this course in England is set to be in 2025, which will deny future students the choice of studying this subject at A Level and Level 3. This decision not only affects students but also puts criminology teachers like myself and my colleagues in schools and sixth forms at risk of redundancy.

Criminology is a vital field that contributes significantly to our understanding of crime, its causes, effects, and prevention. According to the British Society of Criminology (2019), there has been a steady increase in student enrolment for criminology courses over the past decade. This shows that there is a clear demand for these courses among students.

The discontinuation of funding for these courses will limit educational opportunities and career pathways for young people interested in pursuing careers related to law enforcement, social work, counselling or legal professions. It could also potentially lead to a shortage of qualified professionals in these fields.

We urge the government to reconsider their decision on this matter. Please sign this petition if you believe that every student should have access to diverse educational choices including Level 3 Criminology courses in England.
