The issue

As a concerned resident of Tasmania, I write to you about the potential release of Christo Brown from Risdon Prison on 31 October 2025. After serving an 8-year sentence for the despicable crime of raping a 76-year-old woman, Christo Brown is due to be freed. However, his criminal record extends beyond this heinous crime. He has previously served time in Queensland, Australia, and poses a high risk of reoffending.

It is with great urgency and concern for the safety of all women in Tasmania that I call upon Minister of Immigration, Tony Burke, to take decisive action by deporting Christo Brown back to Sudan. We must set an example that violent criminals will not be allowed to remain in our community, especially when there is a credible threat of recidivism.

Statistics show that recidivism rates for sexual offenders are alarming. According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, reconviction rates for sex offenders are significantly high. Tasmania cannot afford to leave its women vulnerable under any circumstance to someone who has repeatedly broken the law in the most horrific manner.

Moreover, deporting those who pose a threat to public safety sends a clear message that Tasmania prioritises the safety and well-being of its residents above all else. While we believe in justice and rehabilitation, it is undeniable that certain cases warrant stronger protective measures for people who are potential victims.

To ensure the safety of our community, it is imperative that action is taken before it is too late. We cannot wait for another tragedy to unfold before making the right decision to protect our residents.

Join me in urging the Minister of Immigration, Tony Burke, to make the tough but necessary decision to deport Christo Brown. Sign this petition and stand together to safeguard our community from potential harm.
